Family Time

This weekend was rare. I got to spend the whole time with all my boys- no shift work, no work, just family. It doesn't happen often, so when it does, I just soak it allll up.

Here's Ryan waving to the train at Multnomah:
We also went to OMSI and toured a submarine. Poor little Gage was too tiny to go :(

Here's Herman the Sturgeon-
The Coriolis Table-

Gage's favorite part-

Charlene's Wedding

A very dear friend of mine got married this weekend and I couldn't be happier for her! She was the most stunning bride I've ever seen- check her out! (Tom looks pretty great too) :)

I love this picture because JD caught them peeking at each other during the minister's prayer. So sweet.
Here are some fun pictures of Ryan and I bustin' some moves :) What can I say? The kid loves to dance!

This One's For the Boys

This post is for the boys. One day, I'm going to look back and miss all the little moments that my boys and I get to spend together. Lately, I've been soaking in our nighttime reads:

This is Gage's favorite and 'favorite' is a real understatement. The boy freaks out when he sees this book and signs 'more' about 5 times per night! He loves to wave goodnight to the moon...and the cow jumping over the moon...and the little old lady whispering 'hush'.
No surprise with Ryan's favorite read :) What gets me about this book is how concerned he gets with the old black engine. He always asks me why that engine looks so sad- such compassion at a young age.

Lovin' these moments...

Fingers Crossed

A few weeks ago, I got a letter from this company:And I must admit, when I opened the envelope my heart was racing like crazy: Turns out, I've made the final application process for a federal teacher loan forgiveness program. The catch is, I have to:

- be highly qualified
- teach math or science
- teach in a low income district
- teach for 5 consecutive years
- teach in an area related to my academic major or minor (my minor is in biology)

I meet all these requirements and...now I'm waiting...and waiting...and waiting. If I get a piece of mail from AES in the near future, I may very well drop to the ground. IF all goes well, approximately half of my 30K student loan debt will be 'forgiven', as in ERASED...WIPED AWAY.

My fingers are crossed...and prayers are said...just waiting and trying to be patient :)

Fall is in the Air

JD's dad, Jack, had a kidney removed last week so we headed to Spokane to check out his 'shark bite' and make sure he had plenty of chocolate covered peanuts to get him through recovery. Here's the crew: Turns out, Jack's second kidney has taken over and is functioning great. Praise God for sure! We came out of the hospital to find a flat tire.

On our way home, we stopped at Green Bluffs in Spokane to check out the local fall-related festivities. The funniest part of this picture was that JD was whistling Chariot's of Fire- Hahahaha. Gage is quite the 'chariot driver' if I do say so myself :)

Only in Eastern Washington, right?

Then, when we got closer to home and the boys got increasingly more restless, we decided to stop at Country Mercantile for a break. JD about had a heart attack when he shelled out $18 for this tractor ride but we made the most of it :) I about died laughing when he asked if the price included the pumpkin! Not only did the price NOT include the pumpkin, but they JUST deflated the big ol bounce house AND instead of walking through the corn maze, we got to take a stroll through the corn FIELD. Seriously, how funny is that?

...and the haystack maze. If you look real close, you can see Gage's little melon.

The Fish Free 411

Our dishes reek of fish. I can't think of one single person who has eaten at our house and had guts enough to admit it but let's face it, it's true. I called the city to ask if other people in our neighborhood have similar complaints. They even sent someone to the house to 'test' our water. Turns out we don't have fish in our water. (I STILL think that's funny).

So now, not only do our dishes remind us of eating on the pier, we also are pretty lucky if they come out of the dishwasher without bits of sand and other river-related stuff. And yes, we rinse religiously prior to loading. Last week, our dishes came out with a delightful new film called baked-on soap. Ever heard of it? It tastes great with FISH!

I'd had it. After two sink-fulls of hand washing, it was time for a new dishwasher. We headed to Sears (after reading all about ratings on Consumer Reports, of course) and picked up our pick. Ahhh...feels good to take charge, eh? We'd never installed a dishwasher but surely it's not impossible...

Things were going pretty great- exceptional, I'd say- until what we thought was the valve that turned off the main water line didn't actually turn the water off at all. Picture this: clean kitchen and high pressure water spraying EVERYWHERE in an uncontrolled manner. First of all, the hose that connects water to a dishwasher is not a kinkable hose. Did you know that? Secondly, the water that connects to a dishwasher is super, duper pressurized- way more than, let's say, holding a garden hose with your thumb. And lastly, the water to a dishwasher is SUPER hot- SUPER hot. JD stood there with his thumb pressed over the tip of the hose and I did what any self-respecting wife/helper would do.

I grabbed every towel we own and then started screaming "What do I do??? What do I do???" He looked at me and said, "Go out in the front yard, open the cement box by my car and turn off the main water line at the street". Seriously...there's a box like that out there? Well alrighty then...I'm on a mission:
How many times have I mowed over this and not really stopped to ask what the durn thing was? Hmmm...learn something new every day. Oh, right, it says "water meter" on it- got it. Great. Moving on...opening the water meter thingy. Sure hope nothing bites my finger off when I try to open this thing...
Um. Yeah. There's a valve in there alright- about three feet down this black, BLACK WIDOW vacation destination. I tried. I seriously tried. I gave myself a pep talk about mind over matter. I thought that maybe if I was quick enough, the black widows wouldn't 'stick' to my skin but I...well, I....just couldn't do it. So I ran back into the house and told JD I couldn't bring myself to put my arm in that hole, to which his response was, well, let's just say this is a PG13 blog and it didn't make the cut. So my new job was to plug the hole with MY thumb while HE turned off the main water line.
Seriously ya'll. That water was HOT. My thumbs (yes, I had to use BOTH) began to crumble at the pressure. I tried to stick the hose against towels, but that made matters worse. Then I got the great idea to just blast the water into the garbage can and hope to God JD could get the water turned off before it filled all the way up. Luckily he did and the rest is history...here she is in all her glory! The Kenmore Elite:

And the best part? NO MORE FISH SMELL!!!!
